Spike Lee Finishing Michael Jackson Documentary

Movie focuses on the singer's 'Bad' album.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>Director Spike Lee is finishing work on an upcoming documentary about <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson's</a> landmark 1987 <I>Bad</I> album that will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the <I>Thriller</I> follow-up that has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.</P><P>Lee, who was friends with the late pop king and directed the official video for the posthumous single <a href="/news/articles/1623590/michael-jacksons-this-it-single-debuts-online.jhtml">"This Is It,"</a>&#8232;, said he learned a lot about MJ while making the as-yet-untitled movie.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Behind The Scenes Of 'Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour'" id="vid:755805" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>According to the <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/spike-lee-michael-jackson-bad-documentary-347297" target="_blank"><I>Hollywood Reporter</I></a>, the movie will be part of a celebration of the 25th anniversary of <I>Bad</I>. "We have footage in this documentary that no one's ever seen, stuff that Michael shot himself, behind-the-scenes stuff," Lee said. "We had complete access to the vaults of Michael Jackson. ... He wrote 60 demos for the <I>Bad</I> record. Only 11 made it. So we got to hear a lot of that stuff, too, so it was just a great experience ... You don't have to be a Michael Jackson-head to enjoy this." <I>Bad</I>, which was released more than five years after Jackson's breakthrough, <I>Thriller</I>, the best-selling album of all time, is also one of the all-time top-sellers. In a record tied by Katy Perry last year, it spawned five Hot 100 #1 singles, including "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana."</P><P>The 25th anniversary re-release of <I>Bad</I> will hit shelves on September 18 and feature additional tracks, a DVD and other material. No release date has been announced yet for Lee's documentary, though it is slated to hit screens this year.</P><P>Lee sat down with everyone from Kanye West to Mariah Carey and Sheryl Crow (who was a back-up singer on the <I>Bad</I> tour) for the film, which he said will show fans a more personal, funny side of MJ. "We really divided it into two things: Artists today who were influenced by Michael, and then people who worked side by side - musicians, songwriters, technicians, engineers, people at the label, who were all committed to Michael, to the follow-up to the biggest record of all time, which still is <I>Thriller</I>," he said.</P><P>A doc chronicling Jackson's rehearsals for what was to be his series of comeback shows, <a href="/news/articles/1625274/michael-jacksons-this-it-has-strong-international-debut.jhtml">"This Is It,"</a>&#8232; was released in 2009 and became one of the highest-grossing music docs of all time.</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></P>

Sharp takes out $4.6 billion loan while it continues restructuring

Image

Much of the business news out of Japan from Sharp hasn't been good, but for now at least it's worked out a loan agreement to keep rolling. It's still pursuing a deal with manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry / Foxconn that would provide a much-needed injection of capital, but those talks have reportedly stalled. Until something happens there it has a 360 billion yen ($4.6 billion) syndicated loan worked out with a couple of Japanese banks that runs until June 30th 2013. We're still not sure how Sharp will proceed with all this, but hopefully an agreement can be reached that brings its sweet IGZO LCD tech and any other new screens it will be showing off at CEATEC next week to more devices.

Chad Griggs vs. Cyrille Diabate at UFC 154

When a promising run in the Strikeforce heavyweight division turned into a rude awakening for the undersized Chad Griggs (11-2) in his UFC debut against Travis Browne, the native of Tucson made the drop to 205 lb. Griggs was originally slated to face Phil Davis in his divisional debut at UFC on Fox 4, but was one of the many fighters who fell to the injury epidemic. “The Grave Digger” will now make his light heavyweight debut at UFC 154, which takes place November 17 at Montreal’s Bell Centre.

Welcoming Griggs to the division will be perennial light heavyweight Cyrille Diabate (18-8-1), whose resume reads like a who’s who of the last ten years. A PRIDE veteran, “The Snake” holds a 3-2 record in the UFC, most recently taking a majority decision over Tom Deblass at UFC on Fuel TV 2. The French kickboxer’s promotional tenure has also seen take victories over Luiz Cane and former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion Steve Cantwell.

'Jack Ryan' Starts Production: Our Hopes, Dreams, And Fears

Jack Ryan

"Jack Ryan," the newest adventure of Tom Clancy's signature hero, officially started production, and while we have high hopes for star Chris Pine and director/villain Kenneth Branaugh, there are also a few nagging fears that have us wondering how this will all play out.

These are our Hopes, Dreams, and Fears for "Jack Ryan."

Hopes
It wasn't that long ago that Tom Clancy was responsible for some of Hollywood's best and most popular thrillers, but in the decade since "The Sum of All Fears," the author's movie presence has been sorely missed. If handedly intelligently (and this is where we thank our lucky stars for Kenneth Branaugh), "Jack Ryan" could help set off a string of strong Clancy adaptations. We've had to sit through too many bland thrillers in recent years to stomach anything short of Clancy's best.

Dreams
Rumors have already begun to make the rounds on the web that "Jack Ryan" will kick off a series of interconnected Clancy adaptations, with "Without Remorse" coming next, which supposedly has Tom Hardy circling the role of John Clark. It's not hard to notice that this plan is not unlike how Marvel handled their heroes. By that model, Tom Hardy should lock up his "Without Remorse" role while "Jack Ryan" is still filming and make a cameo, but that's just us letting our imaginations run wild.

Fears
In short: "This Means War."

This summer has shown studios that you can't get the same mileage out of a bland action movie the way you used to, and there are few established action heroes that potentially lend themselves to generic reshaping like Jack Ryan. I mean, just look at his name. Tom Clancy's heroes have always had the edge and the complex psyche most big budget films stay away from, so here's a chance to break the mold and give us a Chris Pine CIA movie that we deserve.

What are you hoping for from "Jack Ryan"? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

Microsoft battles botnet pre-installed on systems

Imagine turning on a brand new, fresh-from-the-factory laptop and already having a virus on it before you even do anything. That’s the scary situation Microsoft uncovered on several PCs in China, and now the tech giant is fighting the botnet responsible for the infections in court.

Microsoft digital crime investigators in China discovered the Nitol virus when looking into the sale of counterfeit software. The virus was preinstalled on 20 percent of the laptops and desktops tested, Microsoft states on its blog. Somewhere between the assembly line and the retail purchase, cybercriminals were able to introduce the malware.

The majority—85 percent—of Nitol infections have been detected in China, but nearly 10 percent have also been found in the U.S., Microsoft reveals.

Nitol-infected PCs immediately and automatically search the Internet for other computers to connect to and attack.

Microsoft’s further investigation unearthed more than 500 other types of malware being hosted by this illegal network. The malware found was capable of keystroke logging, remotely turning on the video camera and microphone, launching denial of service attacks, and more.

The Microsoft Digital Crime Unit has been investigating the malware since last August. This week, a U.S. District court granted Microsoft permission to take over the 3322.org domain and its 70,000 sub-domains, which the company says is the source of the infection and a major hub of illegal activity. Microsoft has filed a lawsuit against server owner Peng Yong.

Combating botnets by shutting down the domain providers is a strategy Microsoft has had great success with in the past. This is the second botnet disruption for the software giant in the last six months.

It’s also the largest single repository of infected software the company has found to date. More than 37 million malware connections have been blocked from 3322.org since Microsoft won the court order.

Video: Upper Upper North Fork Skykomish Waterfall Run

OK, I hang my head in shame… I have not posted on this blog for nearly two months, and I guess it’s time for me to get on it before Ollie from New Zealand writes to me again to say, “What up?” :)   Really, things have been busy.  More on that later, maybe.  In any case, one of the many things I’ve been wanting to post on here is the video stuff from a July 4th trip I tagged along on with Mike Nash, Sam Grafton, and Christian Knight on the Upper Upper North Fork of the Skykomish River, basically the waterfall run.  I was the videographer/dog handler, which in case it’s not clear, is one of the crucial roles on a trip like this.

One of my favorite shots – Mike, Sam, and Christian checking out the second waterfall.

The Upper Upper North Fork is an incredibly beautiful run that involves driving out to what feels like the middle of nowhere, then hiking up a slight grade with kayaks for around 30 or 40 minutes before putting in not too far above the first of three waterfalls.  The first one had some wood in it, but they all ran the second one and Mike and Sam ran the last one.  (Christian said the portage on the third one was so crappy that he would just run it next time.)  I’m not sure what the level was – not ridiculously high, but Christian said he had never seen it with that much water in there.

Here’s the video of Mike and Christian running the second waterfall – Sam shot through it before I could get the video started.  I think it was pretty straightforward, the hard part was getting through the eddy line and clearing the rock I was sitting on.  (I have no idea where the sound is on these – YouTube, iPhone, aagh.)

Here’s that same drop with the video taken from Mike’s headcam.  Notice the nice boof.

I wasn’t around to video the third waterfall, but here’s the headcam that Mike shot.  This one was more complicated – you had to enter far enough right to avoid something (sorry, I completely forgot what but I’m guessing a rock) on the left, but then switch the angle (which happens at around .45) in order to land more left and avoid a terminal eddy on the right.  Sam got a bit too far right and ended up stuck in there – ultimately he had to get bagged out, and the final verdict was that it’s stickier than it looks from the top.

Here’s the first waterfall, which they didn’t run because of the log spanning the lip of the second drop.

First waterfall on the Upper Upper North Fork. Looked good but has wood spanning lip of second drop.

Wood on the second drop of the first waterfall on Upper Upper North Fork.

This was a super fun day even though I didn’t boat – it’s amazingly beautiful up there, I did not injure myself (this will become notable if I finish the rest of my posts waiting to be written), and I did not get eaten by anything during my hours of thrashing around in the silent woods, even though there was plenty of ‘sign’ with the obvious message clearly stating, “Large bear dines here frequently.” All in all, another awesome day in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

The all-important Dog-Waterfall-Safety-System.

Grandparent-Grandchildren Rafting Combo

I think that adults remember their grandparents in snapshots. When I think of my dad’s father, I see him after his stroke; thin, frail, confined to a wheelchair. I see my dad’s mom, graying, stressed, a bit short tempered. I forget that I knew them before that, when they were healthier and more full of life. And so I start to think of all grandparents as, well…old.

I was surprised this weekend on the South Fork American River when, on my trips notes, I saw, “grandparents bringing grandkids,” and the people who showed up were a couple looking younger than my parents with two of their grandsons, each 12 years old.

“We have seven all together,” announced Sally (we’ll call her for this blog entry) as we floated through Turtle Pond.

“These two are cousins,” followed up Jim (or so we’ll call him)

The boys (we’ll call them John and Sam) started out quiet. I think they were feeling a bit timid at being surrounded by adults. But by the end they were laughing loudly and jumping into the water at every opportunity. John kept yelling, “WATERFALLS!!”

I asked Jim and Sally how they landed on rafting as an excursion to take the grandkids on.

Sally answered, “Well we just like to get out to do things together. Last year we went to Wild Things [a wild animal center/sanctuary in Salinas].”

It was clear throughout the trip that Jim and Sally wanted to show the boys something, to teach them. They reiterated aspects of the river that I was explaining. They glanced over at the boys after each rapid, trying to catch their reactions. They also showed care and concern for their grandsons. John’s “WATERFALLS!!” chants made Sally laugh, but with a slight grimace. Jim checked to make sure the boys were secure going into each rapid. It was fun to see and to be a part of.

Each trip I go on I get to see family dynamics at work in a great setting. Parents and children, brothers and sisters, cousins, and occasionally (like on this trip) some grand-relationships. Each group is packed together on a raft for a whole day. Sounds deadly for some families (including mine at times). But they’re also in an unusual environment, taking on a challenge together. The combination of close quarters for a full day or two, a shared experience and exercising team work is something that makes rafting fun and unique.
