Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android

Android Honeycomb
Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won't affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs," says Andy Rubin, the head of Google's Android group. "We didn't want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut."

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb -- it doesn't want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.

Nexus 4 priced at £390 by purported Carphone Warehouse in-store display placard

Purported Nexus 4 instore display placards list price at 390 euros Carphone Warephone leak, l

Oh, Carphone Warehouse -- it just can't seem to keep what it knows about the LG / Google Nexus 4 under lock and key. Just days after briefly listing the phone on its website, purported in-store displays for the yet unannounced device have leaked out to Android Authority. While essentially of the details are the same as what we saw last (1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 SoC, 8MP cam, 12-hour talk time rating, etc.), the listing reveals that the "sim-free" phone itself will sell for £390 (about $504) -- previously we'd only seen the per-month pricing at 31 euros, which is also found here. There's no mention of that October 30th sale date this time, and it would seem unlikely now given that Google's had to indefinitely postpone its NYC-based Android event for the 29th due to hurricane Sandy. For now, you can get more details from the source link below.

Amazon attacks iPad mini, forgets Kindle Fire is useless in most countries

Amazon attacks iPad mini, forgets Kindle Fire is useless in most countries

While announcing their Q3 numbers yesterday, Amazon took the opportunity to take a few shots at Apple and the newly announced iPad mini. Amazon listed what they think are key advantages for their Kindle Fire HD over the iPad mini, including higher screen resolutions, better speakers, and lower cost. This, perhaps, to help distract from the loss Amazon suffered during the quarter. Here's the checklist courtesy of Amazon's press release:

Compared to the iPad mini, Kindle Fire HD 7” has: - 30% more pixels (1,024,000 vs. 786,432 pixels) - 33% more pixels per inch (216 vs. 163) - Watch HD movies and TV – cannot on iPad mini (iPad mini is an SD device) - Better audio with dual stereo speakers and Dolby Digital Plus - Wi-Fi with dual band, dual antennas + MIMO - Costs $130 less

Amazon posted a $28 million operating loss last quarter, and they expect losses for next quarter as well. This isn’t good news. Neither is Amazon is bringing specs to an experience fight, a strategy that has proven catastrophic for every other iPad competitor in the history of iPad competitors. The Kindle Fire HD is particularly amusing here for a couple of reasons.

First, it's not a tablet. It's a media appliance, a front-end for the Amazon store with great shopping software and middling everything else. Second, because of that, it's barely more than a paperweight outside the small handful of countries in which Amazon sells it.

The iPad mini is a full tablet, available in 90+ countries, with the best tablet software in the industry, and over 250,000 tablet class apps.

So, as they say, good luck with that Amazon.

Donate to Bellator fighter Brian Rogers’ Fund a Fighter campaign, see your name on TV

Bellator fighter Brian Rogers would like your help. He is fighting at Bellator 78 on Oct. 26, and is running a fun contest on Fund A Fighter, a website that encourages fans to make donations large and small to a fighter's camp. In return, fighters give away merchandise, fight experiences and other cool stuff.

Rogers is adding a twist to his campaign. Half of the money raised through his campaign will go to Leap, a special education program Rogers used to work for. He recently quit his job as a special education teacher to focus on fighting full-time, and talks about what more technology for the students would do here:

The biggest donor over the course of this week will get the chance to have his or her name written on Rogers' sponsor banner. The banners are unrolled during a fighter's introduction, and it would be really fun to see a Cagereader's name on that banner.

Here's what to do: go to FundAFighter.com and make a donation for Rogers' campaign. He has a ton of goodies listed for donors, so even if you can't make a huge donation, a small one can still help Rogers and Leap.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions
Bing's new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions -- the fade in and out -- and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States - English and pray that you're part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft's Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

Prime 'beachfront spectrum' for all - if Congress will help

You're probably reading this on junk. And I'm not talking about newsprint - industry woes aside, that's high-quality stuff. But if you're on a computer or an iPad, and you're not plugged into an Internet jack in the wall? Junk, then.
